The Flow of Life

Buddha statue in the morning at Borobudur Temple. Yogyakarta“Your hand opens and closes, opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralyzed.

Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds’ wings…”
-Rumi

With growth and expansion also come pain and change. In order to expand, it is sometimes necessary to experience discomfort and uncertainty. If things always stayed the same you would experience no growth, no wisdom.

Just as we embrace the pleasant experiences in life, we must also welcome the not-so-pleasant times, for these are the times where we learn the most and grow the most. If life was all happy all the time, what would it even mean? Would happiness be so wonderful? The darkness allows for greater appreciation of the light, and both have their place when it comes to matters of soul evolution.

The human soul labors through countless births and deaths in countless bodies over countless lifetimes in pursuit of Wholeness. These experiences of pain and death and birth are necessary for the soul to come back to it sought-after destination. It needs to experience separation from itself in order to find itself. It must contract and expand in order to grow and to complete its journey.

These fluctuations in life are beautiful, even if they are painful. Childbirth is painful, yes? But look what a miracle it is! From the pains of the mother, a new life starts its journey on Earth. Without the labor pains of the mother, the child would simply not be.

From pain we create new life and learn our greatest lessons and become strong and wise. The experiences that cause us to suffer the most are the ones that hold our greatest teachings and the most valuable knowledge. So don’t fight against pain or change. Keep in mind that all is necessary for your evolution and neither pain nor pleasure last eternally. Becoming attached to happiness or pleasure will surely bring you sorrow for it won’t last forever in this physical world. Eventually you will be subjected to something that will rock your world. But face it fearlessly and know that however painful it may be, it is serving you and helping you grow into what you will become. Remember, to grow big and strong, the tree needs both the rain and the sunshine.

The Universe is ever expanding and contracting and it never stays the same.

It is always evolving and so must you.
