Durga Puja 2025 – Your Complete Spiritual and Ritual Guide
Durga Puja is not just a religious festival—it is a spiritual journey into the heart of the divine feminine. In 2025, Durga Puja coincides with the Sharad Navratri period, beginning on Monday, September 22, and culminating in Vijaya Dashami, which falls on the evening of October 1, with cultural celebrations continuing on October 2. These nine nights and ten days represent a potent spiritual window for invoking the different forms of Devi Durga, each representing a distinct cosmic power or ‘Shakti’.
In this guide, you will find everything you need to align your life with the spiritual rhythm of this sacred time—including puja timings (muhurats), daily goddess worship, mantras, sadhanas, offerings, and ritual actions. Whether you are performing this puja at home or attending temple ceremonies, this step-by-step guide will deepen your connection to Devi and enhance your spiritual experience.
The Cosmic Significance of Durga Puja 2025
Durga Puja symbolizes the inner battle between good and evil, ignorance and wisdom, bondage and liberation. The divine mother, known as Durga, arrives to annihilate the inner demons of ego, fear, doubt, and inertia. Each of the nine nights is associated with one of the Navadurga goddesses—each with a mantra, a divine quality, and a spiritual lesson. This progression mirrors the soul’s journey from physical awareness to spiritual mastery.
Durga Puja 2025 is particularly auspicious, with powerful alignments in the Hindu lunar calendar supporting healing, karma purification, spiritual awakening, and wish fulfillment. Performing daily rituals with awareness can lead to deep inner transformation and external success.
Key Dates and Muhurat Timings for Durga Puja 2025
Ghatasthapana – The Sacred Beginning
Date: Monday, September 22, 2025
Time: Brahma Muhurat (approximately 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM IST)
Durga Puja begins with Ghatasthapana — the installation of a water-filled kalash beneath sacred soil or grains, invoking Maa Shailaputri. A copper or earthen pot is preferred. This ritual marks the descent of Shakti into the space of worship. A sankalpa (spiritual intention) is taken here for the entire Navratri.
Days 1–7 – Navadurga Worship
From Day 1 to Day 7, each day is devoted to one of the nine forms of Durga, beginning with Shailaputri and culminating in Kalaratri. Daily practice includes:
Morning puja with flowers, lamp, and mantra
Chanting Durga Kavach, Saptashloki, or daily Navadurga mantras
Offering simple sattvic prasad
Evening reflection or bhajan
Each goddess aligns with a specific chakra, allowing inner spiritual evolution throughout the week.
Maha Ashtami – Peak of Shakti
Date: Monday, September 29, 2025
This is the day of Mahishasura Mardini Puja, one of the most powerful points in Navratri. Devotees offer kumari puja, honoring young girls as embodiments of Shakti. The Sandhi Kaal, between Ashtami and Navami, is spiritually charged and ideal for deep sadhana or lighting 108 lamps. Many also perform Durga Havan for protection and fulfillment.
Maha Navami – Fulfillment and Liberation
Date: Tuesday, September 30, 2025
Maa Siddhidatri, the ninth form of Durga, is worshipped on this day. It symbolizes the completion of the sadhana cycle. Devotees offer special bhog, chant final prayers, and conduct Maha Havan. The energy of Navami supports spiritual breakthroughs, inner silence, and gratitude.
Vijaya Dashami – Immersion and Victory
Dashami Tithi: Begins at 7:01 PM on October 1, ends at 6:40 AM on October 2
Recommended Ritual Timing: Afternoon to evening of October 1
The tithi-based Durga Visarjan should be done on October 1 during the late afternoon or evening. Offer gratitude to the Goddess, release your kalash or altar elements respectfully, and internalize the blessings of your nine-day journey.
Note: Cultural events like Ravana Dahan and public Dussehra celebrations may happen on October 2 for convenience. However, those observing strict rituals should follow the Dashami tithi timings.

Vijaya Dashami – The Spiritual Culmination (October 1 and 2, 2025)
On the tenth day, Goddess Durga returns to her celestial abode. This day is known as Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra and signifies the ultimate victory of truth over illusion. Traditionally, the idol of the goddess is immersed in a water body, symbolizing the dissolution of ego and attachment.
While Dashami tithi technically begins on the night of October 1, spiritual practices like Durga Visarjan, Aparajita Devi Puja, and Vijay Aarti should be performed in the late afternoon of October 1, just before sunset.
Public observance, including processions, feasts, and the symbolic burning of Ravana effigies, will continue into October 2, which is also the date officially marked on most Indian calendars.
Additional Spiritual Practices During Navratri and Durga Puja
Daily chanting of the Navarna Mantra:
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche
This is the core bija mantra of the Devi and is extremely potent for protection and wish fulfillment.
Recitation of the Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmyam over the nine days is highly recommended. Even one chapter per day invokes powerful blessings.
Fasting on all or selected days enhances focus and purification. You can observe a fruit fast, one-meal fast, or only sattvic food based on your capacity.
Lighting a ghee lamp in front of the deity every morning and evening creates an aura of positive energy and invokes divine presence.
On Ashtami or Navami, consider performing Kanya Puja by offering food, clothes, and gifts to young girls as a representation of the goddess.
Use red and yellow flowers, chandan, kumkum, and uncooked rice (akshata) in your daily puja to energize your altar and offerings.
Durga Puja as Inner Awakening
Durga Puja 2025 offers a sacred opportunity not just to perform outer rituals but to undergo inner transformation. The nine nights represent nine doors to the divine, nine stages of inner alchemy, and nine levels of awakening. Whether you chant one mantra or complete an elaborate sadhana, what matters is the devotion and sincerity with which you invoke the goddess.
As Devi arrives, so does a new version of you—free from fear, reconnected to dharma, and aligned with cosmic truth. May this Durga Puja unlock a deeper connection to your soul, and may the goddess walk with you throughout the year ahead.
