Maa Matangi | The Dasa Mahavidyas

In the Dasa Mahavidya Series, we are discussing Maa Matangi today. The ninth of the Ten Mahavidyas. To read the earlier blogs in the series, click the links below

In this blog, we discuss Her appearance, how to do Her Sadhana, what Her Mantras are, and the benefits of Her Sadhana.

The Tantrik form of Goddess Saraswati, Maa Matangi governs speech, music, knowledge, and the arts. However, She is also associated with impurity and pollution. The story behind Her origin states that She rose from food that had fallen after being offered to Shiva and Parvati and asked for left-over food. Why though, would one ask, in a tradition where purity and cleanliness and standards are treated so important, would a Goddess who eats impure food be worshipped? The answer is because She teaches us non-duality. She teaches us that there are impurity and purity co-existing in each one of us and we need to embrace the impurity and move beyond the notions of right and wrong, pure and impure, clean and dirty, and proper and improper.

She also goes on to teach us the meaninglessness of discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, race, and untouchability.

Rumi went on to express Her teaching in one of his poems – “Out Beyond the Ideas of Wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field, I will meet you there”.

Her Appearance

Her complexion is emerald green and She wears red clothes and golden jewelry. She sits on a golden throne and carries a noose, a sword, a goad, and a club in Her four hands respectively. In Her Raja Matangi form, She is seen with a parrot and a lute. The parrot symbolizes speech and lute music.

Her Sadhana

As mentioned, Her Sadhana doesn’t require initiation, a method, or a procedure. She encourages you to break the rules and the procedure and look beyond the notions of what is proper and improper. So you can take a bath if you wish, but not taking one is preferable. However, since Her images and worship material aren’t commonly available, later on in your Sadhana, you will need a Guru to help you proceed.
