The Fascinating Story Behind the Name ‘Durga’

Let us ask you a question – have you ever wondered where the name ‘Durga’ came from and what it represents in the spiritual world? Perhaps you have heard of the Goddess and Her epic battles but are not sure about the meaning behind Her name. Or maybe you have a personal connection with the divine feminine and are curious to learn more about this iconic deity. Whatever your reason may be, we invite you to join us on a journey of discovery and understanding.

Today, we will explore the fascinating origin story of the name ‘Durga’ – one of the most powerful and revered goddesses in Hindu mythology. Let’s begin!!!

In our previous blog, we learned about the heroic tale of Maa Shatakshi, who defeated the evil intentions of Rakshasas, who had stolen the Vedas, and how Maa nurtured the entire universe with Her divine powers. However, this story didn’t sit well with the Durgabh demon, who became consumed with anger upon hearing about Bhagwati Shatakshi’s protection of the world and its deities.

With his powerful celestial weapons and a massive army of one Aukshahini (218,700 battle tasted soldiers), the Durgabh demon prepared to engage in a fierce battle with Bhagwati. As he surrounded the entire army of the gods, Bhagwati created a dazzling circle around the sages and deities, protecting them from harm.

Undaunted, Bhagwati stepped out of the fiery circle to face the demons all by Herself.

A mighty battle raged between the Goddess and the invincible demon. The entire solar system was shrouded in arrows and rain from both sides as their powers clashed in fierce combat. The Divine Maa Bhagwati manifested many fearsome powers such as Kalika, Tarini, Bala, Tripura, Bhairavi, Ramaa, Bagla, Matangi, Tripurasundari, Kamakshi, Tulja, Jambhini, Mohini, Guhakali, and Dash Sahasrabahuka, each unleashing their own unique energy on the battlefield.

As the war continued, more and more divine powers emerged from the Mother Goddess, numbering sixty-four and then countless more. These powers decimated the demon’s army, and the enraged Durgam himself appeared on the battlefield to fight the Goddess Shaktis. Despite his best efforts, the demon was defeated in the ten-day war, and his entire army was destroyed. Filled with anger and resentment, Durgam vowed revenge and soon conquered all the powers of the Goddess.

Undeterred, he brought his chariot before Paramba Bhagwati, ready for a final showdown.

A fierce war broke out between Maa Bhagwati Jagdamba and the invincible demon, continuing until noon. With all Her might, the Goddess struck Durgam with fifteen arrows, each with their own divine energy. The four horses of Durgam’s chariot became the targets of the four arrows of the Goddess, while another arrow claimed the life of his charioteer.

In a dramatic moment, a celestial arrow sliced through the flag of his inaccessible chariot. Two arrows bound both the eyes and arms of the demon, while five more tore open his chest, causing him to fall to the ground and vomit blood. As he took his last breath, an effulgence emerged from his body, merging with Maa Bhagwati, signifying the end of the battle.

The universe rejoiced as the great and mighty demon Durgam was vanquished by the divine power of the Mother Goddess. All the deities were filled with joy and admiration for Maa Bhagwati Jagdamba. They began to sing Her praises, recognizing Her as the divine force behind the creation of the entire world. They hailed Her as Shatlochne, the one with hundreds of eyes, and expressed their deepest respect and gratitude to her.

Bowing humbly at the feet of Maa Bhagwati Bhuvaneshwari, adorned with divine idols and the manifestation of the vast universe, they chanted hymns of praise in Her honor. They marveled at Her infinite compassion, likening Her to an ocean of boundless love and devotion.

With hearts full of gratitude, the gods thanked Bhagwati Shakambhari for Her heroic actions in vanquishing the inaccessible demon, putting an end to their struggles and fears.

The Goddess Bhagwati Jagdamba was pleased with the worship and praises offered by the Gods.

She then addressed the Brahmins and Sages, saying, “The Vedas have emerged from my essence, and they should be safeguarded at all times. Your ultimate duty is to engage in my worship, as there is no better solution for your well-being. I have defeated the demon named Durgam; henceforth, one of my names, ‘Durga,’ will be renowned. As the embodiment of compassion, I am also known as ‘Shatakshi.’ Whoever chants these divine names of mine can break free from the chains of illusion and attain my abode.”

After imparting this knowledge to the deities, sages, ascetics, and Brahmins, Maa Bhagwati Durga disappeared. As we come to the end of this story of the origin of the name ‘Durga,’ we are reminded of the fierce power and unwavering compassion of Maa Bhagwati Jagdamba. She stands as a symbol of strength and protection for all those who call upon Her name.

May we always remember the lessons from this tale – the importance of protecting knowledge and engaging in the worship of the Divine, the power of faith and devotion, and the victory of good over evil.
